Short quotations (fewer than 40 words) Place a parenthetical citation either immediately after the quotation or at the end of the sentence. For a narrative citation, include the author and year in the sentence and then place the page number or other location information in parentheses after the quotation.
Whenever you want to leave out material from within a quotation, you need to use an ellipsis, which is a series of three periods, each of which should be preceded and followed by a space.
Use ellipses to make a quote say something other than what the author originally intended. Include the sentences ending punctuation followed by the ellipsis points when the dots are inserted after a complete sentence. Leave out the spaces before and after the ellipsis points or between them.
You can shorten quotes by removing words from the middle of the quote and adding ellipses to indicate that you have removed some words. Shortening quotes helps the reader focus on the key information.
When a portion of a sentence (or sentences) is not included in a quotation, three ellipsis points should be typed in place of the omitted material.
When using partial quotes (rather than quoting a full sentence), you do not need to introduce the quote with a comma or a capital letter, and the closing punctuation goes outside the final quote marks. Example: Someone once said that a cup of tea would suffice but I cant remember who.
Ellipsis points are used to represent an omission from a direct quotation when it is cited by another writer. This series of three dotswith a space before, after, and between them ( . . . )is inserted where a word, phrase, sentence (or more) is left out.
Shortening a quote If you want to omit some words, phrases, or sentences from the quote to save space, use an ellipsis (. . .) with a space before and after it to indicate that some material has been left out. If the part you removed includes a sentence break, add a period before the ellipsis to indicate this.
Using short quotes in MLA When you want to cite a section of your source that is four lines or less, you set off the quote in the text with double quotation marks directly before and after the quoted material. End punctuation goes before the final quotation mark.
Adding or omitting words in quotations If you omit a word or words from a quotation, you should indicate the deleted word or words by using ellipses, which are three periods ( . . . ) preceded and followed by a space.
