There are two ways to do this: an ellipses, if the dialog trails off, or to indicate a pause or hesitation; and an em dash, if the dialog ends abruptly or is interrupted.
Interruptions. If a character is interrupted during a speech, it should end with an M-dash (space followed by two hyphens). It is not necessary to start the character who is interrupting the speech with an M-dash. Its here!
Use an em dash (the longer dash symbol) to indicate an interruption or an abrupt change in thought or to insert supplemental information. If the interruption or insertion comes in the middle of a sentence, add a closing dash to signal the end of the interruption.
How to Cut Words from Your Writing First: Do the Math to Understand What Youre Up Against. Wait a minute. Start with the Big Cuts. Add Visuals. Choose the Best Example. Condense with Bulleted Lists. Weed Out Wordy Phrases. Ditch Adverbs. Eliminate Repetitive Constructions.
Mini Lesson: Punctuating Interrupted Dialogue Use a speech verb with a modifier. Use an em dash inside the quotation marks to cut off the character mid-dialogue, usually with either (A) another character speaking or (B) an external action.
In the simplest scenario, rephrasing a question as a statement is as easy as removing the question words. Consider the example of Why did the chicken cross the road? All you need to do is remove the question words: why did. After that, youre left with: The chicken crossed the road.
Tell the other person directly that their behavior is negatively affecting you and that you dont wish to see them anymore. Remember that you dont owe them a long explanation. Be firm about setting physical and emotional boundaries that will keep the other persons negativity out of your life.
Em dashes (not to be confused with hyphens or ellipses) are used to indicate that a speaker has been interrupted mid-sentence by another character. The em dash should be placed directly after the final word the speaker gets out before being interrupted (with no extra space) and inside the closing quotation mark.
