The basic syntax to extract a substring in Bash is substring=${string:position:length} . Here, string is the original string from which we want to extract a part, position is the starting point, and length is the number of characters we want to extract.
The slice() method extracts a part of a string. The slice() method returns the extracted part in a new string. The slice() method does not change the original string. The start and end parameters specifies the part of the string to extract.
In Bash, you can use the Internal Field Separator (IFS) to split a string. The IFS is a special shell variable used for splitting a string into words. In this example, we set the IFS variable to a space ( ), then read the string Hello World into an array ADDR.
The cut command in Linux is a text processing utility that allows you to cut out or extract specific sections of each line of a file. It is used with the syntax, cut [option] [text] . In this example, we use the cut command to extract the first field of the string Hello, World! .
In Bash, we can remove a given character or string from the front and the back of an input string using the following syntax: x=some string echo ${x#s} # will print ome string echo ${x%g} # will print some strin # removes the specified (whitespace) characters from the beginning echo ${x#[$\r\t\n ]}
Extract Substring in Bash Using the Cut Command In this syntax: -d : The -d flag sets the character that cut uses to divide the string into separate strings. is the specific character that youre using to split your string. It could be any character like a comma, a space, or a colon.
Default Delimiter: By default, the cut command uses a tab character as the field delimiter. This means that fields are assumed to be separated by tabs. However, you can change the delimiter using the -d option, as we will see in the next point.
Description. The cut command cuts bytes, characters, or fields from each line of a file and writes these bytes, characters, or fields to standard output. If you do not specify the File parameter, the cut command reads standard input.
