IoU threshold : Intersection over Union, a value used in object detection to measure the overlap of a predicted versus actual bounding box for an object. The closer the predicted bounding box values are to the actual bounding box values the greater the intersection, and the greater the IoU value.
IoU is calculated by dividing the overlap between the predicted and ground truth annotation by the union of these.
In case there are 2 boxes that do not intersect, the area of their intersection would be 0, and therefore the IOU would also be 0. In case there are 2 boxes that completely overlap, the area of the intersection would be equal to the area of their union, and therefore the IOU would be 1.
IoU is calculated by dividing the intersection area I of the two boxes A and B by the union area of the two boxes, i.e., I /(A + B − I ). A detected box is considered as a TP if the highest IoU of this box with any ground-truth boxes in the input GUI image is higher than a predefined IoU threshold.
The correct Jaccard Index formula is: iou = intersection_area / (union_area - intersection_area) .
Interpreting IoU scores IoU is quite intuitive to interpret. A score of 1 means that the predicted bounding box precisely matches the ground truth bounding box. A score of 0 means that the predicted and true bounding box do not overlap at all.
Note: 0.5 IoU is typically considered a “good” score, while 1 is perfect in theory. No matter where you get the ground-truth data or how carefully you label, it's extremely unlikely to have the predicted output match the ground-truth bounding box coordinates.
June 28, 2022 By Leave a Comment. Intersection Over Union (IoU) is a number that quantifies the degree of overlap between two boxes. In the case of object detection and segmentation, IoU evaluates the overlap of the Ground Truth and Prediction region.
An Intersection over Union score > 0.5 is normally considered a “good” prediction.
IoU is calculated by dividing the overlap between the predicted and ground truth annotation by the union of these.
