In short, youll be disconnecting the negative cable from the RV side of the system and connecting it to the disconnect switch. Then, a shorter negative cable will connect the switch to the battery bank. Engaging the switch will stop the flow of 12V power in the RV.
You should not disconnect your RVs house batteries when plugged into electric power. The RV runs on the battery and disconnecting it from electricity only turns off the power supply to the camper. If you must, ensure you have an alternative to continuing powering the battery, such as a smart charger or solar power.
Battery power is critical when towing a travel trailer, so you should never have the disconnect switch in the on position while traveling. If an emergency arises and the trailer unhooks from the tow vehicle, the trailers electric brakes cannot activate without 12-volt power.
Battery disconnect switches are designed to cut-off electrical power, help protect against electrical fires and theft when equipment is not in use. They also provide a reliable way to shut down electrical power during maintenance and protect batteries from excessive drain.
A standard or remote battery shut off switch is designed to work by cutting off the connection between your battery and the 12-volt fuses that power the vehicle.
As implied by the name, an RV battery disconnect switch provides you with a simple way to cut off the main RV circuit from your battery. Typically, this switch is located near your battery inside the battery compartment, but it may also be in a nearby maintenance bay.
The switch for battery disconnect should be in the off position most of the time. The confusion many new RVers have about the battery disconnect switch is that the on position turns off the 12-volt power flow and that when connected to shore power, they dont think they need to use the battery for power.
An RV battery disconnect switch shuts off the power going from your batteries to your RV. Essentially, it offers a simple and convenient way to disconnect the primary circuit from your power system. By doing this, youll leave your battery in the same state of charge that it was in before you shut off the power.
