Keeping PII and PHI Out of Your Logs. Many developers make use of common-sense techniques to keep certain sensitive information out of logs for example, by filtering out passwords or IP addresses. These are no-brainers. But, making sure PII and PHI arent logged is especially important.
For logging PII data fields, we replace all the characters with a hash of the original value keeping the length of the string the same. We also allow the programmer to specify how many characters to show or keep without masking. For example, when we log the social security number, we do show the last 4 digits.
Personally Identifiable Information (PII): This includes data like full names, addresses, email address, drivers license number, and phone number.
Credit card information should not be in logs. SSN (or SIN) data should not be in logs.
The main concept is that when event log files are created, they capture information that may contain PII.
Many events in Auth0 tenant logs can contain personally identifiable information (PII). Authentication events trigger log entries that can include users PII.
Secure Sensitive PII in a locked desk drawer, file cabinet, or similar locked enclosure when not in use. When using Sensitive PII, keep it in an area where access is controlled and limited to persons with an official need to know. Avoid faxing Sensitive PII, if at all possible.
Keep PII Out of URLs To avoid this, you should replace the use of sensitive user identifiers in URLs like names and emails with an arbitrary ID. This could be the row ID of the user, or if you need different URLs to map to different field values you could utilize ization here as well.
