ACL reconstruction is surgery to replace a torn anterior cruciate (KROO-she-ate) ligament (ACL) a major ligament in your knee. ACL injuries most commonly occur during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction such as soccer, football, basketball and volleyball.
An ACL tear is a very common knee injury. It can happen to athletes who play sports like football, basketball, soccer and volleyball, and to those who work physical jobs. There are surgical and nonsurgical treatments. Most people recover from an ACL tear within six to nine months.
Can you walk with a torn ACL? The short answer is yes. After the pain and swelling subsides and if there is no other injury to your knee, you may be able to walk in straight lines, go up and down stairs and even potentially jog in a straight line.
And while modern, minimally invasive surgical repairs of the ACL do a good job restoring control of these movements, the risk of re-tear remains higher than we would like, Dr. Gardner explains. In research studies, the risk of re-tear ranges from about 2% to 20%, depending on the patients studied.
Because ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure, it carries certain risks, including: bleeding and blood clots. continued knee pain. disease transmission if the graft comes from a cadaver.
The surgery usually takes 2 to 2 hours, and you wont need to stay in the hospital overnight. To do the reconstruction, the surgeon will drill bone tunnels into the tibia and the femur, remove the torn ligament, then place the ACL graft in about the same position.
Like all ligaments, the ACL takes a very long time to heal. The reason is because ligaments are poorly vascularized. In other words, there arent many blood vessels to provide nutrients for the ligaments, and without nutrients, tissue repair is not possible. Oftentimes, ACL tears require a surgical graft.
An ACL injury can occur if you: Get hit very hard on the side of your knee, such as during a football tackle. Overextending your knee joint. Quickly stop moving and change direction while running, landing from a jump, or turning.
An ACL injury often occurs during sports when your foot is firmly planted and a sudden force hits your knee while your leg is straight or slightly bent. This can happen when you change direction rapidly or land from a jump.
ACL Reconstruction Is Major Surgery Youre given general anesthesia. This means youre unconscious for the procedure. Youll have pain, swelling and stiffness after the surgery. It can be two or three weeks before you walk without crutches.
