The legislation offset 1.72 percentage points, or just over half of the 3.4% cut which the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented with dates of service on or after Jan. 1, 2024. The reduction in the cut applies to services furnished between March 9, 2024, and Dec. 31, 2024.
The Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services July 10 released its calendar year 2025 proposed rule for the physician fee schedule. The rule proposes to cut the conversion factor by 2.8%, to $32.36 in CY 2025, as compared to $33.29 in CY 2024.
Physician payments decline: The proposed 2.8% cut for physician service in CY 2025 is based on a conversion factor of $32.36, down from the current CY 2024 conversion factor of $33.29. Medicare payments currently do not keep up with the rising costs of inflation and running a practice.
For claims with dates-of-service of March 9, 2024 December 31, 2025, the MPFS conversion factor is $33.2875.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the final rule on the 2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule on Nov. 2. First, the bad news: CMS reduced the 2024 conversion factor (i.e., the amount Medicare pays per relative value unit) to $32.74, a roughly 3.4% reduction from 2023 ($33.89).
The PFS is the primary method of payment for enrolled health care providers. Medicare uses the PFS when paying: Professional services of physicians and other health care providers in private practice. Services covered incident to physicians services (other than certain drugs covered as incident to services)
The proposal from the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS) reinforces the clear need for systemic changes and follows a 1.69% Medicare pay cut in 2024 and 2% drop in 2023.
The CMS is proposing lowering the conversion factor used to translate the cost of providing medical services into physician payments by 2.8% for next year. Its the fifth straight year that regulators proposed slashing the conversion factor, ing to the American Medical Association.
