The Social Security Administration has one for people who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income known as SSI payments. A representative payee with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is called a amp;quot;VA Fiduciary. The Fiduciary, like a representative payee, manages VA benefits on behalf of a veteran or other beneficiary who is unable to manage their own affairs because of age, illness, or disability. If youre already receiving Social Security benefits and have a payee, you can ask someone else to be your payee. You should tell your present payee that you plan to ask someone else to help you. The person you want to become your new payee must file an application at a Social Security office.
Payments normally take 3-5 business to process when sent via your financial institution or credit card company.
If youll no longer be the payee, you must notify us immediately. This is important, because well have to select a new payee as soon as possible. When youre no longer responsible for the beneficiary, you must return any benefits, including interest and any cash you have, to us.
Generally, it can take a few weeks to several months. Once the SSA receives the completed application and all necessary documentation, it must review the case, conduct any necessary interviews, and decide based on the beneficiarys best interests.
To request removal of a rep payee, a beneficiary should contact their local office and explain their goal. They will need to complete the appropriate SSA form, which will ask the beneficiary to explain why they can handle their own benefits.
Banks generally take 30 mins to 4 hrs to authenticate beneficiary details. During this cooling period in the bank, the funds will not be transferred resulting in payment delays. Once the beneficiary is activated, the funds are transferred to the specified account.
A claimant may revoke a representatives appointment at any time, but the revocation must be in writing, dated, and signed by the claimant. For convenience, the claimant may use Form SSA-1696 SUP-1 (Claimants Revocation of the Appointment of a Representative).
If approved, the Office of the Public Guardian will submit a formal application to the Social Security Administration requesting the designation as the Representative Payee. This approval process can take from 30 to 90 days.
