When you are cutting two layers of fabric, the pattern pieces do not have to be placed printed side up. If you are cutting one layer, however, the pattern pieces must be placed printed side up. They must also be placed on the right side of the fabric.
It doesnt matter which way. Then lay a pattern piece on it. One side of the pattern piece has text printed on it. One side does not. If it says pattern printed side down that means put the side with the printing face-down.
Lay the pieces on your fabric , and cut under the pattern tissue, on the line for the size you wish to cut out. Now you have the size that you needed, but you havent destroyed the original pattern. Some people trace the pattern off on tracing paper or a similar type of paper.
Some pattern companies print multiple pattern pieces on the same sheet, so if you cut one out you destroy the rest! Unless you are happy to buy the same pattern several times over, then you need to trace off the pieces you need.
The pattern should be pinned with instructions facing up (unless otherwise noted) to the wrong side of the fabric. This is so you can make marks on the fabric for darts and such without the markings showing up on the right side. Most of the time, the fabric is folded with the right sides together.
How to trace patterns Lay out your original pattern on a flat surface. Lay your tracing paper over your pattern, and hold into place using pattern weights or even tins of beans! Using the pencil, and the ruler to assist if you have one, trace over the lines for the size of the pattern that you want.
You can also use a tracing wheel and dressmakers carbon paper to transfer the pattern directly to the fabric. I have never used this method as I like having my patterns on paper / card ready to go straight onto the fabric, but if you would like to give it a go, you can find a tutorial from Tilly and the Buttons here.
