Self-fabric, in sewing, is a fabric piece or embellishment made from the same fabric as the main fabric, as opposed to contrast fabric. Self-fabric used for some pattern pieces such as facings and linings to produce clean garment lines and make the fabric piece blend in with the rest of the garment.
Cut one pair (can also be written as cut 2 or x2) – Garments need a left and right side and the quickest way to get a matching set is to lay your paper pattern piece on fabric folded in two and cut around it. This leaves you with two fabric pieces which are the mirror image of each other.
- “Place on fold” or “Cut 1 on fold” → Line up the fold edge indicated on the pattern with the fold of the fabric. You'll end up cutting one symmetrical piece of fabric from a pattern piece which corresponds to half.
Don't cut the fold, because that side doesn't have seam allowance to allow it to be sewn to anything. So when you are getting ready to cut, fold your fabric so that the grain-line is along the fold and place the pattern so the fold edge is along the fabric fold. Do you know what grain-line is? It's ok if you don't.
"Cut one on fold", "cut 2 main fabric", "cut 1 from self", etc. are all cutting instructions. It tells you how many of each pattern pieces the garment will require, from which fabric and it also indicates how the pattern piece should lay on your fabric.
What does cutting on fold mean? If you're just starting to learn the logistics and techniques of sewing, you'll soon come across the term “Cut On fold”. A sewing pattern that has two symmetric sides can be slashed in half and cut on the fold of your fabric.
Pattern cutting refers to creating basic patterns, with your specific measurements, which you can adapt to make different designs. Since the final product is based on your measurements, the fitting is much better as compared to the ready-made patterns you buy.
If your pattern says to "Cut 2", you'll want to fold your fabric half with your selvages together. (If you are unfamiliar with the word selvage, check out our Fabric Anatomy post.) Notice the selvages are on the right side and the fold is on the left.
