For example, to empty a log file using the truncate command, you can run truncate -s 0 logfilename . Another method is using echo logfilename to overwrite the log file with an empty string.
The steps below can be used to shrink the size of SQL Server Transaction Logs. Use SQL Server Studio Management. Right click on the database with Transaction Log that needs shrinking. Select Tasks - Shrink - Files.
Truncate the transaction log Right-click the database and select Properties - Options. Set the recovery model to Simple and exit the menu. Right-click the database again and select Tasks - Shrink - Files. Change the type to Log . Under Shrink action, select Reorganize pages before releasing unused space and click OK.
Right-click on the folder and click Properties. On the General tab of the Properties page, click Advanced. Click Compress contents to save disk space, and then click OK. Click Apply, and then select whether to compress the folder only, or the folder, its subfolders, and its files.
TRUNCATE TABLE command in SQL is used to remove all the records from the table or specified partitions of a table. Once the TRUNCATE command is used, you cant recover the data even using ROLLBACK. It is similar to the DELETE command in SQL without a WHERE clause.
Saving Logs as Zip Files Select a log in the View Logs table. Note that this action is also available when viewing log details. Click Save as Zip. The application displays a standard Windows dialog box. Select Save to Disk and click OK. Specify where to save the log file.
The safest way to truncate a log file is using the truncate command. In the above command, -s is used to set/adjust the size (in bytes) of the file. When you use -s 0, it means you adjusted the file size to 0 bytes. If you view the file content, it will be empty.
