Use an em dash (the longer dash symbol) to indicate an interruption or an abrupt change in thought or to insert supplemental information. If the interruption or insertion comes in the middle of a sentence, add a closing dash to signal the end of the interruption.
Another common place for the em-dash to show up is when writing speech for characters, and you want to show an interruption or a cut off for another reason. This is used in contrast to the ellipses in speech when you are showing the trailing of a sentence where the speaker grows quiet and/or silent.
cut off is a verb and cutoff or cut-off is a noun.
If the dialogue sentence trails off, I use an ellipsis, that is, three dots. If the dialogue sentence is cut off, perhaps by someone or something interrupting, I use an em-dash, usually 2 hyphens typed one immediately after each other, with no space between the last word and the first of the two hyphens.
A cutting is a piece of writing which has been cut from a newspaper or magazine. [British] a stack of old photographs and newspaper cuttings. Here are the press cuttings and reviews. regional note: in AM, use clipping.
Interruptions. If a character is interrupted during a speech, it should end with an M-dash (space followed by two hyphens). It is not necessary to start the character who is interrupting the speech with an M-dash. Its here!
Em dashes (not to be confused with hyphens or ellipses) are used to indicate that a speaker has been interrupted mid-sentence by another character. The em dash should be placed directly after the final word the speaker gets out before being interrupted (with no extra space) and inside the closing quotation mark.
