How is a fonts point size determined? Point size is determined by measuring the distance from ascent line to the descent line. Why is it helpful to see hidden characters? They show the details of how your document was constructed, they tell even more about your typesetting abilities.
The line spacing of your text may be set to an exact height. When you set the line spacing to Exactly and select a measurement that is equal to or less than the height of the font, underscore characters may not be displayed and characters that have an ascender, descender, or an umlaut may be cut off.
The point size is the smallest unit of measurement. In metal type, point size refers to the height of the metal body on which a typefaces character is cast. In digital typefaces, the metal body is replaced by an invisible box known as the em square. Each character fits inside that em square or em box.
Each line of type has a height that is measured in points. In physical terms, a point is 1/72 of an inch, which means that 72-point type is an inch tall, and 12-point type is 1/6 of an inch.
Point size measures from the height of the highest ascender (peak) to the baseline of the lowercase x. It then measures from the lowest descender (valley) of the font to the top of the lowercase x. Standardized fonts (e.g. Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri, etc.)
Point size refers to the height of the font not the height of the letter. For digital publishing, for at least the past 30 years or more, 1 point = 172 of an inch.
Point is one of many units of measurement for type and the default unit used in contemporary print design.
In metal typesetting, a font is a particular size, weight and style of a typeface. Each font is a matched set of type, with a piece (a sort) for each glyph. A typeface consists of various fonts that share an overall design.
