The AQ is intended to be used to screen for autism spectrum and may make up a component of a thorough diagnostic assessment. A score above the proposed cutoff of 29 highlights docHub traits of autism.
Any score of 26 or greater indicates the presence of autistic traits; the higher the score, the more autistic traits you have. Furthermore, 79.3% of autistic people score 32 or higher (whereas only 2% of controls do), so scores of 32 and above are particularly docHub.
If you achieve a score of 32 or higher on the AQ or below 30 on the EQ test, you should probably go hang out with some aspies and see whether you feel affinity with them or not. Please note: achieving a low score on this test does not mean that you are not autistic.
Results consist of a total score between 0 and 54, where higher scores indicate that many characteristics of ASD were reported. A score of 13 and above indicates ASD is probable, with a true positive rate of 90% and a false positive rate of 22% (Ehlers, Gillberg, Wing, 1999).
Total scores can range from a low of 15 to a high of 60; scores below 30 indicate that the individual is in the non-autistic range, scores between 30 and 36.5 indicate mild to moderate autism, and scores from 37 to 60 indicate severe autism (Schopler et al. 1988).
How are AQ scores interpreted? A score of 26 or higher may indicate a presence of autism. A score of 25 or below may indicate an absence of autism. Almost 80% of autistic individuals score 32 or above. The majority of non-autistic individuals score between 15-17 on average.
A total score of 29 or more is indicative of clinically docHub autism traits (Broadbent, et al., 2013). Using the cut-off score of 29 has a false positive rate of 1%, however will fail to identify 14.4% of people who actually do meet the diagnostic criteria for DSM-5 defined Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Scoring. Being a 50-question test with a 1-mark maximum score per statement, the AQ test has a scoring range of 0 to 50, with a threshold score of 26. This means that a score of 26 or higher may be an indication of autism traits, while a lower score proves the contrary.
