There are several methods commonly used for PCB cutting: V-Groove / Score-and-Snap: This is a widely used and cost-effective method for PCB cutting. A V-groove or a series of closely spaced score lines are made on the top and bottom sides of the panel using a specially designed cutting tool.
PreciseBits 2-flute spiral V-tip mechanical etching and PCB trace isolation tools offer an optimum combination of high-resolution cutting and tip strength. The plunge style tip geometry insures burr-free material removal at all plunge depths and cutting widths.
It defines the minimum distance required between conductive traces or between traces and other components to ensure electrical safety and prevent arcing or breakdown. Refer to the applicable standard for the required clearance values based on the voltage levels involved.
Vias are conducting holes in the PCB. They electrically connect one PCB Layer with another, say, connecting the top PCB layer with the bottom PCB layer. Vias could also connect layers in between. On the other hand, Traces are meant to conduct electricity from one PCB component or PCB pad to the other.
Linear cutting (V-cutting): This is the most common cutting method. By using cutting tools or V-knives, perform straight cuts along the edges of the PCB board or specified cutting lines to achieve the desired size and shape.
Using a hobby knife, carefully move the blade back and forth across the small trace to sever the connection under the red solder mask. Caution! When cutting a trace, be careful not to cut any adjacent traces, pads, and your hand! The metal blade on a hobby knife is sharp so make sure to take your time.
You can use the cutting tool to carefully scrape away at least 3mm length of the overcoat material. A rotary tool grinding bit, held in your hand, is a good tool to gently scrape away resist in a controlled way. Make sure to scrape lightly to avoid damaging the conductive material of the trace underneath.
