Pap test results: What normal, abnormal, and unsatisfactory screening test results mean Normal Pap test results: No abnormal cervical cells were found. Unsatisfactory Pap test results: The lab sample may not have had enough cells, or the cells may have been clumped together or hidden by blood or mucus.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
Women who are 21 to 29 should have a Pap test alone every 3 years. HPV testing alone can be considered for women who are 25 to 29, but Pap tests are preferred. Women who are 30 to 65 have three options for testing. They can have a Pap test and an HPV test (co-testing) every 5 years.
A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future. New cell changes can still form on your cervix.
You may also need an additional LEEP if abnormal cells return. Youre at a greater risk of recurrence if youre infected with a high-risk strain of the human papillomavirus, or HPV. HPV is responsible for the cell changes associated with cervical dysplasia that can lead to cervical cancer without treatment.
The test checks for abnormal cells in the cervix that are cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous. During a Pap smear, your healthcare provider takes cells from your cervix to examine under a microscope for signs of cancer.
A normal, also called negative, Pap smear result indicates that no evidence of abnormal cells were found in the sample. An abnormal, or positive, result on a Pap smear indicates that abnormal cells were detected in the sample and additional treatment or testing may be necessary.
What do my cervical screening results mean? No HPV found - means you dont have high risk HPV. HPV found with no cell changes - means you have high-risk HPV, but you do not have changes to your cervical cells. HPV found with cell changes - means you have high risk HPV and cervical cell changes.
