Cut-off: The wavelength at which a filter becomes effective. For surface parameters we normally analyse wavelengths between an upper and lower cut-off: these are referred to as Ls or s (shortest) and Lc or c (longest). Cut off is also used synonymously with Sample Length as the sample length is always set to Lc.
As an approximation, the roughness length is approximately one-tenth of the height of the surface roughness elements. For example, short grass of height 0.01 meters has a roughness length of approximately 0.001 meters. Surfaces are rougher if they have more protrusions.
The sample lengths have the same numeric value as the cut-off. In other words, if you use a 0.8mm cut-off, then the filtered data will be broken down into 0.8mm sample lengths. These sample lengths are chosen in such a way that a good statistical analysis can be made of the surface.
1 Surface metrology. Surface texture is a complex condition resulting from a combination of roughness (nano and micro-roughness), waviness (macro-roughness), lay and flaw.
The cutoff refers to the predetermined wavelength to be removed from a primary profile. A roughness profile is created by removing the long-wavelength component from the primary profile, and a waviness profile is created by removing the short-wavelength component from the primary profile.
Evaluation length refers to the part of a given length extracted from the profile in order to determine arithmetic mean deviation and other roughness parameters. An evaluation length must contain at least one sampling length.
