For example, when a sharply hit ball is caught on one hop by the first baseman, he might immediately tag out the runner at first who is forced to advance to second; but when this is done a runner already at second is no longer forced to advance to third base. The result of such a tag is called removing the force.
Tagging up at 1st Base. The base runner needs to have some speed as well. They can always tag and read the throw. Another time a base runner on 1st base needs to tag up is on routine fly balls with runners on 1st and 3rd base and the outfielder makes a high or lazy throw to home plate.
Definition. A force play occurs when a baserunner is no longer permitted to legally occupy a base and must attempt to advance to the next base. The defense can retire the runner by tagging the next base before he arrives, though not if the defensive team first forces out a trailing runner.
No matter how it plays out, tagging at 1st will put pressure on the defense and allow for the runner to read the play and make a well-informed decision based on how the play develops. These situations are difficult to think of in the moment, so its important to do your homework ahead of the play and think the game!
The defensive player can also run and touch the base before the runner for an out. The defensive player is NOT required to touch the runner in this instance. A tag out occurs when a runner tries to advance to the base without being forced.
Note that the second baseman, tagging such a forced runner coming from first for the third out, also prevents scoring by the speedy runner from third as this tag is considered a force out (any out, tag, or touching the force base, on a forced runner is a force out).
There is a force-out at every base when the bases are loaded, in a bases-loaded situation with two outs, players are usually taught to make the throw to first base; however, in some situations, that may not be the easiest throw to make.
The first baseman is the cut-off man for plays at the plate from right field. When a ball is hit to the right fielder, run toward the catcher and get into position as quick as possible. You want to be in a direct line from the outfielder to the catcher. Be about 40 feet in front of the catcher and put your hands up.
