We use CUT TO: when we want to make a point of ending the scene where we did. For example, if you end a scene on a character telling his wife that hes sorry for cheating on her and it will never happen again, and the beginning of the next scene is him in bed with another woman, adding CUT TO: makes sense.
Similar to the voice-over technique, off-screen dialogue is also pretty easy to format in a screenplay. Instead of adding a (V.O.) to our characters name, well add an (O.S.) for off-screen dialogue. A parenthetical can also be used BESIDE the character cue in very specific circumstances: if your character is speaking OFF SCREEN (O.S.) or as a VOICE OVER (V.O.). Example: EXT. KEVINS HOUSE DAY A car pulls into the driveway.
Off screen sound effects should be written normally in the description. Something like this: The sound of tires SCREECHING can be heard off screen. I think second hand conversation would also be handled in the description. Special formatting issues in screenplays SellingYourScreenplay.com special-format SellingYourScreenplay.com special-format
(O.S.) means off screen and is used when a character isnt on camera, but their voice can still be heard, perhaps behind a door. (O.C.) means off camera indicating the character is part of the scene but not seen on camera at that moment. MATCH CUT. This is used when the ending image of one scene matches the beginning of the next.
If a characters speech trails off, it should end with an ellipsis (). If a second character finishes that sentence, their speech should begin with an ellipsis.
OFF SCREEN is when you hear a characters voice in the scene, but he/she is not seen. Both are easy to write. Just use (VO) or (OS) next to the characters name speaking the dialogue.
