The weight of your mail is one of the most crucial factors in determining postage. The United States Postal Service (USPS), for instance, allows one First-Class Mail stamp for every ounce (or 28 grams) of letters. If your letter exceeds this weight, youll need to add additional postage.
A letter of 2 ounces 1 Domestic Forever Stamp and one additional ounce stamp at 20 cents costs 78 cents. A letter weighing 3 ounces 1 Domestic Forever Stamp and two additional 20-cent stamps costs 88 cents.
Standard letters. If your letter is a standard-sized envelope and weighs 3.5 ounces or less, you will need one stamp. Large envelopes. This includes 9x12, legal, and manila envelopes, Two stamps are needed for the first ounce, and postage will be an additional $0.20 cents after.
Avoid placing two Forever stamps on a mail piece for heavier mail. Additional ounces are much cheaper costing only $0.28 per additional ounce rather than $0.73 for a one ounce letter. If you add two Forever stamps to a 2-ounce letter, you would be paying for an item that should only cost $0.90.
Customers must affix additional postage when mailing letters weighing in excess of 1 ounce and/or letters subject to the nonmachinable surcharge or mailpieces subject to another rate of postage (e.g., large envelopes or packages).
In 2011, all first-class one ounce stamps became forever stamps with the exception of stamps in coils of 500, 3,000, and 10,000. As the name suggests, Forever Stamps can be used to mail a one-ounce letter regardless of when the stamps are purchased or used and no matter how prices may change in the future.
Stamps are changing From 31 July, 2023, you wont be able to use stamps which dont have a barcode on. But no need to panic. You can use non-barcoded stamps until 31 July 2023. Royal Mail has also introduced the Stamp Swap Out Scheme so you can swap all your non-barcoded stamps for the new barcoded ones.
