In 2024, the Social Security tax limit rises to $168,600. (For 2023, the tax limit was $160,200. So, if you earned more than $160,200 this last year, you didnt have to pay the Social Security payroll tax on the amount that exceeds that limit.)
An invalid SSN is one that the SSA never assigned. A valid SSN will never look like this: The first three digits are 000, 666, or in the 900 series. The second group consists of 00 as the two digits. The third group consists of 0000 as the four digits.
The last four digits of the SSN are the serial number. The serial number represents a straight numerical series of numbers from 00019999 within each group. Serial number 0000 is not assigned.
The letters at the end of a SSN indicate the claim number for a SSI or Social Security beneficiary. Per the SSA: If you are an SSI beneficiary, your claim number is your nine-digit Social Security Number (SSN) (000-00-0000) followed by two letters such as EI, DI, DS, DC.
The nine-digit SSN is composed of three parts: The first set of three digits is called the Area Number. The second set of two digits is called the Group Number. The final set of four digits is the Serial Number.
The last three serial numbers issued are 9998, 9999, and 7999. Serial number 0000 is never used. Each State goes through all of its area numbers with group number 01 and serial numbers 0001-9999 and 7999 before using group number 03. Thus, 989,901 SSNs can be issued for each area number.
You arent required to pay the Social Security tax on any income beyond the Social Security wage base limit. In 2024, this limit rises to $168,600, up from the 2023 limit of $160,200. As a result, in 2024 youll pay no more than $10,453 ($168,600 x 6.2%) in Social Security taxes.
SSN is given a serial number from the series 2001-2999 and 7001-7999. The last three serial numbers issued are 9998, 9999, and 7999. Serial number 0000 is never used. Each State goes through all of its area numbers with group number 01 and serial numbers 0001-9999 and 7999 before using group number 03.
