Charles Zona (CZ): Hello, and welcome to another McCrone Group webinar. My name is Charles Zona, and today we are happy to welcome Doug Meier. Doug is going to talk to us about X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, otherwise known as XPS. Before we get started I would like to give you a bit of Dougs background. Doug is a senior research scientist with McCrone Associates. He specializes in surface sensitive spectroscopies, such as Auger electron, X-ray photoelectron, infrared reflection absorption, thermal desorption, and low-energy electron diffraction. Doug was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerces Silver Medal for his work in the development of conductometric chemical microsensor array technology for the detection of chemical warfare agents. He also has over ten years of micro beam analysis experience prior to joining McCrone Associates. Doug will field questions from the audience immediately following todays presentation, and this webinar is being recorded and will be available o

The maximum sample size that can be analyzed in most XPS instruments is on the order of 20 cm2 and often on the order of a few cm2. Allowed sample heights are also instrument dependent, but typically are 25 mm.
In most cases, XPS analysis samples many particles or many grains in a polycrystalline material, while EDX analysis may sample only one particle or one grain. EDX analysis may require many more sets of data to achieve an accurate average simply due to local sample inhomogeneity.
High-Resolution XPS (HR-XPS) uses a monochromator which provides the following advantages over a standard x-ray source: An x-ray energy distribution with reduced energy width improves chemical selectivity by narrowing the spectral peaks. A lower spectral background.
The maximum sample size that can be analyzed in most XPS instruments is on the order of 20 cm2 and often on the order of a few cm2. Allowed sample heights are also instrument dependent, but typically are 25 mm.
Its main features are: Highly automated instrument that uses focused monochromatic Al (K) X-rays for spatially resolved chemical analysis. X-ray spot size ranges from 10 m to 200 m.
Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.
XPS / ESCA The average depth of analysis for an XPS measurement is approximately 5 nm. PHI XPS instruments provide the ability to obtain spectra with a lateral spatial resolution as small as 7.5 m. Spatial distribution information can be obtained by scanning the micro focused x-ray beam across the sample surface.
