2 x 6 = max. 2-3/16 diameter hole. 2 x 4 = maximum 1-7/16 notch. 2 x 6 = maximum 2-3/16 notch.
These notches cant be deeper than one-sixth the joists depth, nor longer than one-third the joists depth. In a 2x8 joist, for example, notches can be 1 14 inches deep, which should allow for recessed gas piping.
Any stud shall be permitted to be bored or drilled, provided that the diameter of the resulting hole is not more than 60 percent of the stud width, the edge of the hole is not more than 5/8 inch (16 mm) to the edge of the stud, and the hole is not located in the same section as a cut or notch.
Notches can only be made in the top OR bottom of the joists, (not both) within the permitted area to a maximum of 35mm. Holes may only be made on the joists centreline within the permitted area to a maximum diameter of 65mm. Additional holes must be at least three diameters (centre to centre) apart.
[BS] C101. Notches on the ends of joists shall not exceed one-fourth the joist depth. Holes bored in joists shall not be within 2 inches (51 mm) of the top or bottom of the joist, and the diameter of any such hole shall not exceed one-third the depth of the joist.
If that same wall is a loadbearing wall, the maximum size hole allowed to be drilled or notched from the wall studs is 25% of the 2x4, or 7/8. If more than the maximum amount is removed from the wall studs, the use of approved stud shoes, per exception 2 noted above, would be required to reinforce the wall studs.
Example: In the joist span table below, the highlighted cell (10-5) indicates that a #2 grade 2 x 8 Douglas Fir joist, spaced 24 apart, can have a maximum span of 10 feet - 5 inches (10-5) if designing for a live load of 40 PSF, a dead load of 10 PSF, and a deflection limit of the total span in inches divided by 360
In a 2x8 joist, for example, notches can be 1 14 inches deep, which should allow for recessed gas piping.
