What Is the First Cut Off a Log Called? The first log cut above the stump is called a butt log or butt cut. Butt off refers to cutting a piece of a log due to a defect. Most of a trees value is in the butt log.

Like others said, latex paint will work to seal end grain. A little bit better way is to take old yellow glue or white glue you have that is older than 12 months and use this. You cut the old thick glue 50/50 with water, mix it up and paint it on. Seals up the end grain better than paint.

Test a small area to ensure acceptable appearance and penetration. Apply first coat to end cuts using a synthetic brush or stain pad. Second coat can be applied once first coat has penetrated but is still damp. Second coat must be applied within one hour of applying first coat.
I seal all log ends with Anchorseal. You should do so with a fresh end cut. If the log has been setting more than a day, make a fresh cut to eliminate any developing splits. Any splitting that has occurred before sealing will not be stopped by Anchorseal.
