It also has a red line indicating when your RPM becomes too high and can potentially cause damage to the engine. So, if you notice shaking or see the pointer going over or speedily approaching the red line, the engine is under excessive load and works too hard.
The redline refers to the maximum engine speed that an internal combustion engine is designed to operate without causing damage to any internal components. The redline of an engine depends on various factors such as the mass of the engine parts, composition of the parts and their interrelated balance.
It means dont operate the engine with the needle in that portion of the RPM meter. It is called the red zone. It means you are operating the engine outside of what the manufacturers engineers determined to be the safe RPM operation zone of that engine in that particular application. It means you shouldnt be there.
When the car is in top gear and the engine is in redline (due to high speed), the ECU will cut fuel to the engine, forcing it to decelerate until the engine begins operating below the redline at which point it will release fuel back to the engine, allowing it to operate once again.
Redline is the maximum safe RPM for the engine to run at. It will be fine as long as you dont go over the redline by money shifting or something. The manufacturers test it to make sure the engine is safe.
Redlining will not hurt any engine provided you dont exceed it gas or diesel. In fact the redline is point where the manufacture has tested it for safe operations. It might cause a heat problem if ran there for a period of time. It can accelerate engine wear but it is not going to blow up.
