The actual term redline comes from the red bars that are displayed on tachometers in cars and trucks. The redline refers to the maximum engine speed that an internal combustion engine is designed to operate without causing damage to any internal components.
Rev limiters are pre-set by the engine manufacturer. There are also aftermarket units where a separate controller is installed using a custom RPM setting. A limiter prevents a vehicles engine from being pushed beyond the manufacturers limit, known as the redline (literally the red line marked on the tachometer).
If youre not accelerating, youre spinning, which is wasted power. Same thing with the rev limiter. If youre hitting it, your engine is not making as much power as it could to turn the back tire. For most people and most motorcycles, hitting the redline every now and again shouldnt be an item of concern.
Redlining in a diesel engine can be caused by the engine receiving fuel from an unintended source, such as flammable vapour in the intake air, or a broken oil seal in a turbocharger. This is known as diesel engine runaway, and can be stopped by blocking the air intake, or opening the decompression valve.
The redline is generally understood to mean the maximum revs the engine is built to withstand for fairly short periods of time only without failure. So if a car with a computerized engine has an automatic transmission, you can very likely run it to redline hundreds of times without doing it any serious harm.
Redlining will not hurt any engine provided you dont exceed it gas or diesel. In fact the redline is point where the manufacture has tested it for safe operations. It might cause a heat problem if ran there for a period of time. It can accelerate engine wear but it is not going to blow up.
Redlines vary anywhere from a few hundred revolutions per minute (rpm) (in very large engines such as those in trains and generators) to more than 10,000 rpm (in smaller, usually high-performance engines such as motorcycles, some sports cars, and pistonless rotary engines).
