Tachometer (Reciprocating Engine Aircraft) Red Radial - At maximum permissible rotational speed (r.p . m.). Green Arc - From maximum rotational speed for continuous operation to minimum recommended for continuous operation (except in the restricted range, if any).
Engine redlining refers to operating a cars engine at its maximum RPM as indicated by the red zone on the tachometer. This zone serves as a warning threshold and exceeding it can stress the engines internal components.
The red line is a safety indicator, conservatively set by manufacturers to accommodate engine imbalances. While its there to protect your engine, most engines can handle higher RPMs. However, its crucial to consider engine temperature and oil temperature.
The answer to your question is that redline is an arbitrary number picked by the engineers that designed the motor as a SAFE maximum speed for you to rev the engine. The fuel shutoff limit is designed by the same engineers so you CANNOT rev the engine above their set RPM limit.
What does redlining the engine mean? The actual term redline comes from the red bars that are displayed on tachometers in cars and trucks. The redline refers to the maximum engine speed that an internal combustion engine is designed to operate without causing damage to any internal components.
4:33 10:12 So it is a bit of a myth the maximum power is at the red line or the top end of the RPM range theMoreSo it is a bit of a myth the maximum power is at the red line or the top end of the RPM range the power band is fairly unique to each engine. And its generally within that middle third or middle to
It means dont operate the engine with the needle in that portion of the RPM meter. It is called the red zone. It means you are operating the engine outside of what the manufacturers engineers determined to be the safe RPM operation zone of that engine in that particular application. It means you shouldnt be there.
Most modern cars have computer systems that prevent the engine from straying too far into the redline by cutting fuel flow through the fuel injectors/fuel rail (in a direct-injected engine)/carburetor or by disabling the ignition system until the engine drops to a safer operating speed.
