PHQ-9 scores can be used to plan and monitor treatment. To score the instrument, tally the numbers of all the checked responses under each heading (not at all=0, several days=1, more than half the days=2, and nearly every day=3). Add the numbers together to total the score on the bottom of the questionnaire.
Regarding severity, PHQ-9 comprises five categories, where a cut-off point of 04 indicates no depressive symptoms, 59 mild depressive symptoms, 1014 moderate depressive symptoms, 1519 moderately-severe depressive symptoms, and 2027 severe depressive symptoms [25].
Assign the numbers from 1 to 4 for each answered item and divide by total number of answered items. Individuals with scores higher than 2.5 are considered symptomatic for PTSD.
Kuiper et al (2022) report cut-off points for the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ) total score as follows:
A score of 18 or above would indicate symptoms of health anxiety. A score of 19 or above would indicate symptoms of social anxiety. A score of 60 or above would indicate symptoms of agoraphobia. A score of 8 or above would indicate symptoms of panic disorder.
The GHQ-30 is the most widely validated version in non-perinatal populations and yields an overall total score. The recommended cut-off for identifying cases of psychiatric disorder is 4/5 for GHQ scoring and 23/24 for Likert scoring (GL Assessment, 2010).
The scale is appropriate to use with adults and asks about symptoms in the previous two weeks. A raw score (from 0 to 27) is presented where higher scores indicate more depressive symptoms. A PHQ-9 score of more than 10 has a sensitivity of 88% and a specificity of 88% for major depression.
