It usually makes sense to arrive at the theatre at least 20 minutes before the start time on your ticket. It will give you time to navigate the lines, find your seat, use the restroom, and read through your Playbill. In terms of proper etiquette, make sure you are seated before the lights go down.
Its best to aim to arrive at least 30 minutes before the shows scheduled start time. This allows time to get through security, find your seats, and familiarize yourself with the theater layout.
Broadway shows start on time, well close to on-time most nights, and you dont want to miss the first few minutes. Many shows will not allow latecomers to be seated until intermission.
Please arrive on time out of courtesy for the performers and your fellow audience members. Arriving late may result in seating holds in the lobby or alternate seating within the theater.
To avoid missing the start of the show, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before curtain. If you do get there late and the performance is already underway, be aware that management will seat you at their discretion, which is usually at an appropriate break in the show.
While the production will begin at the time printed on your ticket, the house will open for seating generally one half hour before the start time. For 8 PM curtains, this means that ticket takers and ushers will begin the seating process at 7:30 PM. For 2 PM curtains, seating will begin at 1:30 PM, and so on.
For a musical, often first few rows of the mezzanine is better than back of the orchestra but try to get as close to the center of the theater as possible (not on extreme sides). I like sitting in the first row but most people dont.
While audience members can arrive late to the theatre, performances in theatres will begin at the advertised start time. So if you arrive late at the theatre, youll miss part of the action. Some shows will not let in audiences until a suitable moment in the show, so you may miss lots of the show.
