Most designers receive a trade discount on furniture, so they will pay less for it upfront and then charge you the retail cost, keeping that percentage to cover the time it takes to coordinate the purchase. In some cases, firms may choose to charge a higher commission, marking items up 10% to 30% above retail.
A simple rule of thumb many interior designers follow is the 70:30 hack for decorating a room. 70% of the room in one style and 30% in another. The golden rule, also known as the 60-40 rule or 2:3 rule in interior design, says that if the furniture takes up more than 60% of the floor area, the room is over-furnished. As a general rule of thumb, we suggest allocating about 7-10% of the homes value for interior design expenses. This will give you a design with some Mid-Range products. If youre looking for Designer level finishes, we recommend budgeting about 25% of the homes overall value.
An interior designers percentage of project fee can range from 10% to 45%, although the average is in the 15% to 30% range. The project cost includes materials and furnishings, as well as contractor fees. You then add your design fees to this cost. A 20% to 35% mark-up on purchases and services is typical.
