The batteries provide your RV with a source of power when no external power is available. The amount of power the batteries can provide on their own is fairly low they can run the lights, water pump, and small appliances for the better part of the day, but that is about it.
The battery that supplies 12 volts to your RV is also called the house battery and you might have more than one. This is a type of deep cycle battery that powers the home appliances in your RV, like your microwave, refrigerator and TV.
What Does a Disconnect Do? As implied by the name, an RV battery disconnect switch provides you with a simple way to cut off the main RV circuit from your battery. Typically, this switch is located near your battery inside the battery compartment, but it may also be in a nearby maintenance bay.
The switch for battery disconnect should be in the off position most of the time. The confusion many new RVers have about the battery disconnect switch is that the on position turns off the 12-volt power flow and that when connected to shore power, they dont think they need to use the battery for power.
Though the technical specifics of how they work can sometimes be unclear. Especially, if you are camping at a site that doesnt offer up shore power. In a time like this, you might be wondering whether or not your RVs outlets will run on the charge of the house battery? The short answer is that yes!
You might think that your battery will stay charged at the level you left it when its in storage, but unfortunately, this isnt the case. If you arent using your RV, you should always disconnect your RV battery when in storage to keep your RV battery and electrical system healthy.
Two main power sources charge your batteries: your RVs generator and shore power. The converter or inverter on your RV will use the power from your generator to recharge your house batteries while it is running.
While the engine is running, the alternator continuously charges the starting battery. Second, the RVs house/service battery or battery bank (typically deep cycle batteries) run everything electrical in your living space when you arent plugged into shore power.
