A dot, placed after a note or rest on the stave, indicates that the note length or rest length is increased by half the original length of the note or rest. In arithmetical terms, this means that the note or rest is 150% of its normal value, or 1.5 times.
A dot added to a note increases the duration of that note by half. A second dot represents half the value of the first dot, or a quarter of the original duration. (These are known as double-dotted notes.)
This means that a dotted note is equivalent to writing the basic note tied to a note of half the value for instance, a dotted half note is equivalent to a half note tied to a quarter note. Subsequent dots add progressively halved value, as shown in the example to the right.
A dot is written immediately after a note or rest, and it increases its duration by half (Example 6). For example, a quarter note is equivalent in duration to two eighth notes; therefore, a dotted quarter note would be equivalent to three eighth notes.
A dotted note is a musical notation that indicates a note should be played for a longer duration compared to its regular counterpart. This extension of length is achieved by adding a dot immediately after the note head. The dot adds half of the original notes value to its duration.
A dot written after a note adds one-half of the notes value to the original notes value. A quarter note equals one beat. A dot after the quarter note adds beat ( of the original value). A dotted quarter note equals 1 beats.
A dot increases duration by one half. Since an eighth note is half the duration of a quarter note, we will substitute it for the 1/2 symbol. Since a quaver is half the duration of a crotchet, we will substitute it for the 1/2 symbol. As you can see, a dotted quarter note is equal to a quarter note plus an eighth note.
When a dot is placed next to a half note the duration of that note increases from two beats to three beats. the duration of a dotted half note is therefore three beats. Likewise, a dot placed next to a whole note would increase its rhythmic duration from four beats to six beats.
So for example, the half note by itself gets two beats. If you add a dot, you are taking half of the value of the half note (half of two is one) and adding it to the original value (which is two for the half note). So a dotted half note is the note (worth two) plus half of two (one), which of course equals three.
Fermata. A fermata resembles half a circle with a dot above or below a note or a rest.
