all right this is 10 minute technique the series where i show you an easy writing technique you can take away and add to your own writing in around about 10 minutes today iamp;#39;m talking about motifs something i come back to time and time again itamp;#39;s a joke about motifs because never mind anyway in case the term is new to you a motif is an image or a sound or an action that recurs time and time again in your story it has symbolic significance and it contributes towards the themes of your story motifs can be open and large like settings for example a gothic house might represent evil in a story and that can be a motif but for the purposes of this video i really want to focus in on smaller visual motifs images really that contribute towards the themes of an overall story and iamp;#39;ll give you some examples as well so why are motifs important to storytellers like us well itamp;#39;s because they back up the meaning or the message of the story but those things tend

It can relate to the theme, or it can be the dominant or central idea itself. Concepts like betrayal and forgiveness can be motifs, for example, but so can particular images and sounds, such as trees or bells.
You can think of symbols as motifs minus the repetition. Its the more default word we use when referring to an object that represents an idea, and unlike a motif, symbols only need to appear once to have an impact.
Examples of this motif include Romeo comparing Juliet to the sun, the two of them discussing the light of the moon, descriptions of their love as a lightning strike, and the Friar comparing their love to fire and gunpowder. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck: the motif of soft things returns over and over in the novel.
The frog is really a prince is a motif because its a recurring theme or idea that appears in various stories, particularly in fairy tales and folktales.
The easiest way to remember the difference is this: Motifs must recur throughout the story; symbols can appear just once. A story can contain many symbols that arent motifs. For instance, a scale is often a symbol of justice, a flag may symbolize freedom, and a crown is a symbol of power.
Light is one of the most universal and fundamental symbols.
Symbolic Motifs: These motifs take the form of symbols that represent a larger idea or theme. Conceptual Motifs: These motifs are built around a particular concept or idea that recurs in the story. Structural Motifs: These motifs are repeated patterns or structures in the story.
Em dashes (not to be confused with hyphens or ellipses) are used to indicate that a speaker has been interrupted mid-sentence by another character. The em dash should be placed directly after the final word the speaker gets out before being interrupted (with no extra space) and inside the closing quotation mark.
