Generally, an AFP level between 0 ng/mL to 10 ng/ml or even up to 40 ng/mL can be normal for adults But normal levels vary, so talk with your healthcare provider about what your results mean for you. An extremely high level of AFP in your bloodgreater than 400 ng/mLcould be a sign of liver tumors.
Normal and Critical Findings Between 15 and 20 weeks, AFP levels typically range between 10 and 150 ng/mL. Adult blood levels greater than 200 ng/mL in patients with liver cirrhosis strongly indicate hepatocellular carcinoma.
Notably, both AFP cutoff levels of 20 and 400 ng/mL are used frequently in daily practice; 20 ng/mL is the upper limit of normal AFP level and 400 ng/mL is the cutoff value used in both the CLIP and TIS staging systems [10,11].
The cut-off -fetoprotein (AFP) value for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is 17.4 ng/mL. 2. As a diagnostic tool for HCC, a cut-off of 100 ng/mL is more sensitive than one of 200 ng/mL, with similar specificity and positive predictive value.
A positive test with a high AFP suggests a birth defect like spina bifida. Thats typically a result of 2.5 times or more than the average level of AFP youd expect to see at that point in your pregnancy. A positive test with low AFP could mean a problem like Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome.
