If you insert a new text box in PowerPoint, it will be messed up and not be created in a way that you actually wanted to be and thats actually helpful for you to work with it. When you insert an image into a placeholder in a custom layout, the default setting is for the image to fill as much of the container as possible, cropping out anything that doesnt fit in the containers aspect ratio. To fix this issue, after inserting the image, you can change the crop settings to fit.
