There are three main types of dental impressions preliminary, final, and bite registration. Preliminary impressions are accurate reproductions of a patients mouth. Theyre typically used in the diagnosis process, as well as for recording dental arches and teaching purposes.
If the patient has some natural teeth that occlude, it is possible to reproduce most everything present in the mouth digitally without taking immediate denture impressions for dentures or a bite registration.
Your dentist takes two impressions of your mouth after your gums have healed. The dentist uses this imprint of your gums to begin building the dentures. It gives the team full details of your mouth and surrounding soft tissue.
Shrinkage is in the order of 1.5%, and is due to the thermal contraction from mouth to room temperature. The material has poor dimensional stability and the model must be poured as soon as possible after the impression is taken; this should take place within 1 hour.
Impression materials show shrink during polymerisation. The average shrinkage of C-silicon impression materials is 0.6-1% after 24 hours. The A-silicons show 0.15-0.2% shrinkage after 24 hours.
These impression materials are classified as hard-and soft-set. The hard-set material sets faster (in about 10 minutes, compared with 15 minutes for the soft-set material), although the hard- and soft-set materials both begin to set in about 5 minutes.
Typical volumetric shrinkage of dental composites is generally in the range of 16%14,15,16. Considerable literature exists on the DOC, PS and their effect on physical and mechanical properties of dental composites7,17,18,19,20,21,22.
In addition to water evaporation, impression shrinkage is related to syneresis and associated water exudation onto the impression surface caused by continuing contraction of the colloidal skeletal network even in 100% humidity.
