What is dot gain? Dot gain is a measure of the difference between the actual ink dot size of the printed piece and the ink dot size specified by the source file. It refers to ink dots appearing larger on the printed piece due to either a mechanical or optical effect. Dot gain is not good or bad.
In prepress and printing dot loss refers to halftone dots either disappearing or reducing in size. This is the opposite of dot gain, the process in which halftone dots increase in size.
Halftone and full-tone refers to how the imaging areas on the printing plate is constructed (see Fig. 5). A full-tone area is a continuously inked area over the en- tire image, whereas a halftone image area is made up of small dots (see Fig.
In the online printing world, dot refers to the pattern of dots that simulate a continuous tone image with solid ink. However, most modern printing technologies simply cant produce these tones to create dot patterns.
Dot gain is caused by ink spreading around halftone dots. Several factors can contribute to the increase in halftone dot area. Different paper types have different ink absorption rates; uncoated papers can absorb more ink than coated ones, and thus can show more gain.
Screens for screen In conventional screening, dots are aligned on an invisible grid whose lines are spaced at a given pitch - for example 120 lines per inch (about 48 lines/cm). Rather confusingly for screen process printers, this grid is also called a screen.
Dot gain is a tricky flexo printing defect with a variety of causes. As its name implies, the dots on your printed substrate increase in size. The printed result then comes out darker and sometimes fuzzier than intended. Thats a quality defect you can ill afford.
Its called dot gain and occurs whenever a squeegee is pulled across a screen, causing pressure. Dot gain happens with all inks and will happen to anyone. Screen printers typically choose 30% dot gain. Check out the blog below for more information about adjusting artwork for dot gain.
