The reason for doing this is that you get the best money out of your logs and the best products you need to know the quality of the wood in it and what the markets need with who you sell it to. This usually involves knowing the type of species you have the size of the trees you have and the quality. In most cases for most trees the lower part of the tree has the highest quality wood and the most clear wood. This is because in most cases it has lost the branches first and the wood has grown over giving it the most amount of clear wood.
