How is a hamstring graft harvested?

Graft Harvest An incision in the sartorial fascia allows the exposure of the tendons. The tendons are identified and then placed individually through an open tendon stripper and released from its muscular attachment proximally while flexing the knee and advancing the stripper in a proximal direction.

What is the recovery time for ACL hamstring graft?

The graft is strong enough to allow sport at around 6 months however other factors come into play such as confidence, fitness and adequate fitness and training. Professional sportsmen often return at 6 months but recreational athletes may take 10 -12 months depending on motivation and time put into rehabilitation.

How do they take a hamstring graft for ACL?

Small holes are drilled into the upper and lower leg bones where these bones come together at the knee joint. The holes form tunnels in your bone to accept the new graft. Then the graft is pulled through the predrilled holes in the tibia and femur.

How are ACL grafts attached?

The graft is threaded across the knee, leaving a piece of bone in each of the tunnels and the patellar tendon in the position of the original ACL, thus reconstructing the ligament. The graft is then secured in this position, most commonly by wedging a screw between the side of the bone and the tunnel.
