Exclamation point, a la Shmoop. We all have that one friend. The one whos an endlessly happy person always excited about life and school and her boyfriend and her twelve cats. Lets call her Cindy. Talking to Cindy is a pain in the rear, because every sentence she speaks comes out like this OMG! Did you see what happened in the library today! Carey Clueless dropped her Coke on the carpet and it went everywhere! Too many exclamation points, Cindy. Try and contain your enthusiasm. Exclamation points serve a special purpose in writing. They add oomph to a sentence or indicate the presence of strong emotions, like surprise, pain, fear, or urgency. Exclamation points are like salt. They should be used sparingly. Clearly, our friend Cindy never learned this lesson. For example, when Cindy talks about what she had for lunch, it isnt necessary for her to say, Im having a bologna sandwichexclamation point. Bologna sandwiches arent exciting. However, if Cindy were to find a roach on

Ellipses are used to express an omission. But note that an emdash () should be used for interruptions and/or for trailing off (see under DASHES). In the middle of a sentence use a space before and after the ellipsis. At the end of a sentence use four dots total.
Em dashes (not to be confused with hyphens or ellipses) are used to indicate that a speaker has been interrupted mid-sentence by another character. The em dash should be placed directly after the final word the speaker gets out before being interrupted (with no extra space) and inside the closing quotation mark.
Interruptions and Ellipses A great way to capture the emotion of your character is to interrupt their speech with a double dash (--) at the point of interruption, or an ellipses () if the dialogue is interrupted by action. Be careful of overusing the ellipses. This is a common mistake made by aspiring writers.
An exclamation point is used after a word group or sentence in order to emphasize a point or to express strong emotion or surprise. Use of the exclamation point is optional for the writer. It is one of the few ways that a writer can indicate how words may sound when spoken.
To show someone cutting themselves off abruptly, youll use an em-dash. Grammatically, the em-dash reads the way someone biting off a word or snapping their jaw closed sounds in a verbal conversation.
Use an em dash (the longer dash symbol) to indicate an interruption or an abrupt change in thought or to insert supplemental information. If the interruption or insertion comes in the middle of a sentence, add a closing dash to signal the end of the interruption.
Interruption is when a listener interjects and takes the speakers place, which results in the speaker not talking, but becoming a listener. Overlap is when a listener interjects but the speaker doesnt stop talking, which results in two speakers talking at the same time.
