Ellipses are used to express an omission. But note that an emdash () should be used for interruptions and/or for trailing off (see under DASHES). In the middle of a sentence use a space before and after the ellipsis. At the end of a sentence use four dots total.
Exclamation points are intended to convey strong feelings, shouting, or show emphasis. ing to the Chicago Manual of Style, they should be used sparingly to be effective. In my writing work, I live and die by that rule.
If there is a lengthy pause, write it as [pause]. Most brief pauses will not require the indication of a pause. Instead of typing [pause], using .., or , use a comma, which is used to indicate slight pauses in speech. Identify all nonverbal communication, such as pauses, laughter, crying, sighing, and so on.
Use an em dash (the longer dash symbol) to indicate an interruption or an abrupt change in thought or to insert supplemental information. If the interruption or insertion comes in the middle of a sentence, add a closing dash to signal the end of the interruption.
Em dashes (not to be confused with hyphens or ellipses) are used to indicate that a speaker has been interrupted mid-sentence by another character. The em dash should be placed directly after the final word the speaker gets out before being interrupted (with no extra space) and inside the closing quotation mark.
If the person saying Good morning is to be interpreted as being unusually happy, excited or emphatic about the greeting, then use the exclamation mark. Otherwise, the usual period at the end of a sentence will do. A question mark would not be appropriate in this particular sentence.
Interruptions. If a character is interrupted during a speech, it should end with an M-dash (space followed by two hyphens). It is not necessary to start the character who is interrupting the speech with an M-dash. Its here!
