See Form SS-4 for information on applying for an EIN. A single-member LLC that is a disregarded entity that does not have employees and does not have an excise tax liability does not need an EIN. It should use the name and TIN of the single member owner for federal tax purposes.
Unfortunately, looking up your EIN on IRS.gov isnt an option, as theres no EIN lookup tool. Still, that doesnt mean youre entirely out of luck. You can find it on the official IRS notice you received when it was issued, call the IRS directly or locate your EIN on business documents.
To cancel your EIN and close your IRS business account, you need to send us a letter that includes: The complete legal name of the business. The business EIN. The business address. The reason you wish to close the account.
You cannot cancel your EIN, however, you can close your account with the IRS. Youll need to send a letter to the IRS office and explain the reason you want to close your tax account. Youll need to include important details about your business, such as the corporation name, structure, address and EIN.
An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is a unique 9-digit number assigned by the IRS to entities for tax purposes. EINs never expire, and once an EIN is assigned to an entity, it will not be reissued even if the entity disappears.
The IRS cannot cancel your EIN. Once an EIN has been assigned to a business entity, it becomes the permanent Federal taxpayer identification number for that entity. Regardless of whether the EIN is ever used to file Federal tax returns, the EIN is never reused or reassigned to another business entity.
