An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a nine-digit number that IRS assigns in the following format: XX-X. It is used to identify the tax accounts of em- ployers and certain others who have no employees. However, for employee plans, an alpha (for example, P) or the plan number (e.g., 003) may follow the EIN.
An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is a unique 9-digit number assigned by the IRS to entities for tax purposes. EINs never expire, and once an EIN is assigned to an entity, it will not be reissued even if the entity disappears.
Generally, yes. Most irrevocable trusts require an EIN as they are treated as separate tax entities.
On the other hand, if the trust is an irrevocable trust, its no longer under the direct control of the grantor. In fact, the grantor cannot make changes to the trust without the permission of the beneficiaries. These trusts do need their own EIN, because they are a separate entity from the grantor.
For an irrevocable trust, the trust identification number is the grantors Social Security Number if the grantor is alive, the trust holds only assets that do not produce income, AND the grantor has not elected to have an EIN assigned.
If the trust is irrevocable, on the other hand, its a separate legal entity. It cannot be changed by the grantor of the trust. The beneficiary would need to allow for any changes on their own end. Consequently, the irrevocable trust will need its own tax ID number, also known as an EIN.
To cancel your EIN and close your IRS business account, you need to send us a letter that includes: The complete legal name of the business. The business EIN. The business address. The reason you wish to close the account.
Every organization must have an employer identification number (EIN), even if it will not have employees. The EIN is a unique number that identifies the organization to the Internal Revenue Service.
