Reduced activities. Without an ACL, the knee is unlikely to support aggressive landing, cutting and pivoting. Living with a torn ACL may mean limiting participation in sports, work and activities that cause the knee to swell, give way or feel unstable.
Partial ACL Tears The prognosis (outlook) for a partially torn ACL is often good, with the recovery and rehabilitation period usually lasting at least 3 months. However, some patients with partial ACL tears may still have instability symptoms.
How long does it take to recover from a torn ACL? It usually takes six to nine months to recover from a torn ACL. Competitive athletes may need a little longer than this to heal fully before theyre cleared to return to their sport. Your provider will tell you when you can resume physical activities.
While each person is different, you may heal from a partial ACL tear within 3 months, especially if you undergo physical therapy to rebuild strength and function in your knee.
The short answer is that a partial tear of the ACL will not heal on its own. People often think that because the ligament is not completely torn it will heal on its own, but this is typically not the case. The ACL does not heal on its own because it does not have any blood supply to it.
An avulsion fracture is a serious injury that can stop you from playing your favorite sports. Youll need a cast and rest, and possibly surgery.
A torn ACL cant heal on its own, but its possible to live with it (especially if you have a low-grade tear). But if youre an athlete or want to return to physical activity, youll need surgery to repair your ACL.
In patients who have only a partial tear, nonsurgical treatment may be an option. Some patients who have a complete ACL tear do not require surgery and are able to return to activities, such as cycling or running with or without a brace. Your doctor will discuss all treatment options with you.
