building construction Regular construction hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. For noise complaints about building construction: During construction hours, please contact Inspectional Services at ISD@boston.gov. You can also search approved building permits.
It shall be unlawful to operate or permit the operation of any tools, piledrivers, hammers, or equipment used in construction, drilling, or demolition work between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and anytime on Sunday, such that the sound therefrom creates a noise disturbance.
Construction, as defined above, shall be conducted only between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. weekdays, and 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Saturdays. No construction is permitted on Sundays or holidays except where permitted by state law, in which case construction shall be permitted only between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
Unreasonable or excessive noise shall be defined as noise measured in excess of 50 dBa between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. or in excess of 70 dBa at all other hours when measured not closer than the lot line of a residential lot or from the nearest affected dwelling unit.
The Boston Municipal Code (Chapter 16, section 26) sets the general standard for noise that is unreasonable or excessive: louder than 50 decibels between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m., or louder than 70 decibels at all other hours.
Construction Cut-off Date means the date the project is capable of initiating operations as determined by the DIRECTOR. The date determined by the DIRECTOR controls in case of conflict.
Pile cut-off level is the actual level at which the concrete piles are placed underneath the pier so they can retain the same level.
