What is the rest time for ACL reconstruction?

It usually takes 9 to 12 months for a patient to return to participating in sports after an ACL reconstruction, depending on the level of competition, the type of activity, and progress made with physical therapy. Patients are able to walk with crutches and a leg brace on the day of surgery.

How long after ACL reconstruction can I drive?

Most people are fit to drive 5-6 weeks after surgery. Ideally you should wait until 6 weeks after surgery if possible. You can discuss this further with your surgeon. You are also advised to contact your car insurance company before you start to drive again.

How long do you have to be off work for ACL reconstruction?

You can drive when you are no longer using crutches or a knee brace, are no longer taking prescription pain medicine, and have some control over your knee. For most people, this takes 1 to 2 weeks. How soon you can go back to work depends on your job. If you sit at work, you may be able to go back in 1 to 2 weeks.

Does ACL reconstruction qualify for disability?

If you had surgery to repair your torn ACL, you may need to take several months off work for recovery and physical therapy. But remember, to be approved for Social Security benefits, your torn ACL must prevent you from working for at least 12 consecutive months.

How long after ACL surgery can you go back to school?

Most patients who undergo an ACL reconstruction return to school between 6-8 days. If it is during the school year, contact the school to see what accommodations they can provide (such as additional set of books, elevator key, help to and from classes, leaving classes five minutes early, etc.)

How do you know if an ACL reconstruction failed?

While there are no definitive warning signs for ACL surgery graft failure, patients should be vigilant for symptoms such as recurrent instability, persistent pain, or swelling after surgery, as these may indicate a potential problem with the graft.

What happens if a torn ACL is not repaired?

If nothing is done, the ACL injury may turn into chronic ACL deficiency. Your knee may become more and more unstable and may give out more often. The abnormal sliding within the knee also can hurt cartilage. It can trap and damage the menisci in the knee and can also lead to early osteoarthritis.

How long after ACL surgery can you walk normally?

After 2 to 3 weeks, you should be able to walk without crutches. As well as specific exercises, activities that do not put much weight on your knee may also be recommended, such as swimming for fitness and cycling.
