A general guideline is that you need at minimum of 10 cases with the least frequent outcome for each independent variable in your model. For example, if you have 5 independent variables and the expected probability of your least frequent outcome is . 10, then you would need a minimum sample size of 500 (10*5 / . 10).
Reference line: intersection point at which there is a balance between sensitivity and specificity; it corresponds to the optimal cutoff on logistic regression probabilities (community size 127 = p 0.50).
Imagine a binary classification problem. Lets say I have 800,000 predicted probabilities stored in predtest . I define a cutoff as any value in predtest such that the values that are greater than or equal to cutoff are assigned the value 1 and the values that are smaller than cutoff are assigned the value 0.
The rule states that one predictive variable can be studied for every ten events. For logistic regression the number of events is given by the size of the smallest of the outcome categories, and for survival analysis it is given by the number of uncensored events.
Logistic regression chooses the class that has the biggest probability. In case of 2 classes, the threshold is 0.5: if P(Y=0) 0.5 then obviously P(Y=0) P(Y=1). The same stands for the multiclass setting: again, it chooses the class with the biggest probability (see e.g. Ngs lectures, the bottom lines).
The standard cutoff is 0.5, which means that if the predicted probability is greater than 0.5, that observation is classified as a positive (or simply as a 1).
