Commas (Eight Basic Uses) Use a comma to separate independent clauses. Use a comma after an introductory clause or phrase. Use a comma between all items in a series. Use commas to set off nonrestrictive clauses. Use a comma to set off appositives. Use a comma to indicate direct address. Use commas to set off direct quotations.
Ellipses are used to express an omission. But note that an emdash () should be used for interruptions and/or for trailing off (see under DASHES). In the middle of a sentence use a space before and after the ellipsis. At the end of a sentence use four dots total.
If the dialogue sentence trails off, I use an ellipsis, that is, three dots. If the dialogue sentence is cut off, perhaps by someone or something interrupting, I use an em-dash, usually 2 hyphens typed one immediately after each other, with no space between the last word and the first of the two hyphens.
Em dashes (not to be confused with hyphens or ellipses) are used to indicate that a speaker has been interrupted mid-sentence by another character. The em dash should be placed directly after the final word the speaker gets out before being interrupted (with no extra space) and inside the closing quotation mark.
Use an em dash (the longer dash symbol) to indicate an interruption or an abrupt change in thought or to insert supplemental information. If the interruption or insertion comes in the middle of a sentence, add a closing dash to signal the end of the interruption.
Interruptions and Ellipses A great way to capture the emotion of your character is to interrupt their speech with a double dash (--) at the point of interruption, or an ellipses () if the dialogue is interrupted by action. Be careful of overusing the ellipses. This is a common mistake made by aspiring writers.
