The original machine described by Bates allowed numbering with a four-digit sequence, ranging from 0000 to 9999. For example, page 852 in a document set would be 0852. Courts and law firms quickly adopted this system.
How to add Bates Numbering to a PDF in docHub. Open the file. Click Tools. Select Edit PDF. Choose More. Click Bates Numbering and Add. Select Output Options to customize the serial numbers. Click OK.
Bates numbering is a method of sequentially numbering pages with a reference identifier to make them easier to locate and reference. This could be as simple as sequential numbers like 0001 and 0002, or it may include alphanumeric strings (such as ABC0001 and ABC0002).
The Bates numbering machine helped organize and manage business paperwork. Office workers used it to stamp consecutive numbers or numbers in a repeated pattern onto pages of documents. The mechanism -- an improvement patented by Edwin G. Bates in 1891 -- automatically changed the number, making quick work for staff.
Bates numbering best practices Use the right number of digits. In Bates numbering, the number of digits in a number is often used to indicate how many pages are in a specific document set. Add extra information. Make sure each number is unique. Keep it consistent.
Easy Bates is a simple program that stamps Bates numbers onto PDF, JPEG, and TIFF documents. If you need to stamp only one or two PDF files, then many tools will do the job well.
If you set the start page number to 1000, then a citation on page 1 of the document will appear as at 1000, a citation to page 2 will appear as at 1001, and so on. Second, you can add a prefix to the citation. This is very common when documents are Bates labeled. Page 1 may be stamped as DEF00001.
